Modeled after British universities, its main campuses are located in Fort, Kalina, and Ratnagiri in Mumbai. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across 36 departments, 2 postgraduate training centers, and 354 affiliated colleges, with approximately 80,000 enrolled students. Some of its affiliated research institutions, such as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), enjoy international repute. The university has produced distinguished alumni including Mahatma Gandhi, former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, constitution framer B.R. Ambedkar, film star Aishwarya Rai, and Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis. Consistently ranked among the top 500 universities in the THES-QS World University Rankings, its engineering college was ranked 41st globally by Business Insider in 2012.
